UN and Development partners discuss partnership to support communities in Torit

23 October 2018, Torit – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General, Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator, Alain Noudehou, led a visit of a high-level delegation to Torit consisting of UN officials, Donors and NGO Representatives to start a conversation about the Partnership for Recovery and Resilience.

The visiting delegation held discussions with Government and Community leaders in Torit and local partners. The purpose of the visit was to engage local stakeholders in discussion about how best to support efforts in Torit State to build resilience and strengthen the ability of people to cope.

The visit reflects UN’s new way of working, which emphasizes partnerships and joint programming aimed at stopping the trend of increasing vulnerability, working across the peacebuilding-humanitarian-development efforts and improving coordination and collaboration.

The DSRSG/RC/HC/RR, Alain Noudehou underscored the core of the Partnership, ownership, indicating that: “the partnership is not about us, it is about you, the people of Torit. It is about the leadership you show to make sure that everybody is included in the plan that is being put together for a recovery and for building resilience in Torit.

The Ambassador of United States, Thomas Hushek, who was part of the delegation emphasized that “The Partnership is an opportunity to create a “New Way of Working” in South Sudan that shifts the focus from “meeting needs” to “reducing needs, risks, and vulnerability”. It brings a focus to working with individuals, households and communities”.

The delegation, which consisted of representatives from the donor community including Canada, the European Union, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States, and representatives from FAO, IOM, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UNIDO, UNMISS, UNOPS, UN Women, WFP, as well as the Titi Foundation, Rural Action Against Hunger and BRAC, then visited the Torit State Hospital, where they interacted with beneficiaries of support implemented by the UN and partners. They concluded the visit with a Community Conversation Dialogue with leaders from faith-based organizations, women’s groups, youth, private sector, traditional leaders, NGOs and technical partners.
