Who we are
United Nations support to South Sudan spans more than 50 years. During the civil war, the UN provided humanitarian assistance under the umbrella ‘Operation Lifeline Sudan’. When the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2005, officially ending one of Africa’s longest wars, a UN Country Team was established to support the South Sudanese Government in carrying out a broad range of humanitarian, recovery and development programmes.
The UN Country Team, which consists of 22 agencies, funds and programmes, works closely with the Government at both the central and state levels to ensure that international assistance responds to the needs and priorities of South Sudanese people. It is led by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, who helps direct common issues that require agencies, funds and programmes to speak with one voice, and present a common UN position. The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator guides the strategic development and management of flagship initiative and promotes joint decisions including all representatives of the participating UN organizations.
The Resident Coordinator’s Support Office provides direct support to the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and the UN Country Team, including advisory, technical, organizational and management support. It also helps coordinate the work of non-resident UN organizations. Coordinating development operations promotes more strategic support for national plans and priorities, makes operations more efficient and reduces transaction costs for governments. This helps the UN to be a more relevant and reliable partner for governments.
The UN Country Team is currently drafting a development framework, which will map out the UN’s priorities for the period after independence. The framework will be aligned to the South Sudan Development Plan, which runs from 2012-2014.
